Now, if you get into the details of the Great Wildebeest Migration, you must read each line of this blog attentively. After getting all these details, you will manage to plan a satiating vacation in Africa.

About The Great Migration in East Africa

Every year, Africa’s wide-open plains are the setting for the wildlife migration as millions of Burchell’s zebras, wildebeests, antelope, and other animals in herds walk past from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. During this long journey, they cover almost 620 miles in search of grasses to survive and simultaneously attempt to evade predation from lions, leopards, & cheetahs and starvation.

They even cross the rivers filled with crocodiles ready to catch the meal. Amid this long journey, they battle diseases and endure injury & fatigue. If we talk about the number of animals that die during the great migration, it is 2,50,000.

Watching thousands of animals walking together is an incredible experience. The migration also attracts other animals while moving through the landscape. It is a unique sight to watch where tourists can see diverse species and admire the scenery. To get an enhancing experience, you need to stay at least more than a few days in different locations to ensure the best glimpse of the wildebeest migration.

Furthermore, you need to plan for the kind of experience you want. For this, you must take the help of a knowledgeable person who knows every corner of Africa. This way, you will have a fantastical experience. If you want a more adventurous expedition, go off the beaten path for the Serengeti wildebeest migration. While looking at the migration, it may be hard to understand the movement of the animals. Zebras and Wildebeest are good grazers; they always chase the grass. They can be seen eating different parts of the same grass and become excellent partners.

Best Time to See the Great Migration

For anyone visiting Great Migration, there is no time when you miss the migration because it is an eternal annual cycle. So, no matter when you visit Africa to see the migration, you can always catch a glimpse of the wildebeest migration. Tanzania and Kenya don’t have the traditional four seasons summer, winter, spring, and fall. Instead, the seasons are mostly divided into wet and dry seasons. June to September is the dry season when the temperatures are warm, and rain is infrequent. However, the rainy season begins in late October and lasts till May. The legitimate wet season is April through May.

So, the best time or season to watch the Great Migration in Africa is from July to early October, when the season is dry. During this time, the weather remains warm and stable. Also, the animals are abundant during this season. The skimpy vegetation and dried-up waterways push animals to move north to find food and drink. To plan your vacation around the migration movements, you must look at the following timelines to visit East Africa at this time:

1. January-February - January and February are wet months, and visiting Serengeti during this time can be impossible due to bad weather conditions and varying soil types. So, you must avoid traveling to Africa to watch the Serengeti migration.

2. June-July - During this period, animals are moving north through Seronera Valley in May and into the Western Corridor for June and July. A large number of wildebeest are most likely to be in Grumeti Reserve and the Western Corridor of the Serengeti. These months coincide with the summer holidays, so more people plan to see the great migration during this time. During this time, some migration groups start to head north to the Mara River and follow the thundershowers.

3. July-October - During late July and October, the groups move through the Northwestern regions of Serengeti National Park. The main hurdle for these herds is crossing the Mara River over into Kenya. This part of Africa has a beautiful landscape speckled with large rock outcroppings, woodlands, and an open space brimming with wildlife. It is a magnificent place to catch a glimpse of the great migration Serengeti crossing the Mara River. Most animals crumble to death here both due to predation and injury. In October, many animals start heading south through the west and Lobo areas.

4. November-December - The herds are scattered in large groups among different areas; Southern Serengeti, Loliondo, Ndutu, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. These months are a little rainy, but it's all green.

Where to Witness The Great Migration in East Africa?

The whole migration process flows between Tanzania and Kenya, covering a distance of about 1200 miles. It is driven by the trails of plentiful grazing plains and reliable water. The great migration in Africa is a natural process that depends on several environmental factors like weather and animals. In this case, telling where to witness and when to see the great migration is a mere assumption.

The migration starts from Tanzania’s southern Serengeti to the north through the Western Corridor and to the Masai Mara. Animals close their loop by arriving back at their southern Serengeti calving grounds via the Lobo or Loliondo Game Controlled area in Tanzania. Irrespective of where you can see the great migration in Africa, viewing wildlife in any given area is abundant. Lacs of wildebeest, zebras, and gazeballs participate in migration, so you are sure to see thousands of them making their way through this region.
