Wings of Tatev: Riding One of the World's Longest Cable Cars in Armenia

The short answer
What it is: a 5.7 km cable car in southern Armenia that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop double-track cable car. It runs from Halidzor village to Tatev Monastery in about 12 minutes.
What it costs: 9,000 AMD return or 6,500 AMD one way from March to November, and 5,500 AMD return or 4,000 AMD one way from December to February. Children up to 140 cm pay 1,000 AMD.
When it runs: Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00. It is closed every Monday.

Few rides anywhere feel as dramatic as this one. The cabin glides out of Halidzor, the ground drops away, and within minutes you are hanging about 320 metres above the Vorotan gorge. Then a stone monastery appears on the edge of a cliff, exactly as it has for more than a thousand years.

This guide covers what the ride is like, the 2026 ticket prices and timings, how to get there from Yerevan, and how to fit it into an Armenia trip. For the history and churches at the top, read our Tatev Monastery guide.

What the ride feels like

Each cabin carries a group of passengers plus an attendant, and departures run about every 15 minutes in season. The first few minutes climb over farmland and forest. Then the cable stretches across the gorge, and the views open in every direction: the river far below, the green slopes of Syunik and, ahead, the walls of Tatev on their cliff.

•       Stand near the front windows going up for the best first view of the monastery.

•       Wind can slow the cabin and add a few minutes. It is normal.

•       If you are nervous of heights, stay near the centre of the cabin. The ride is smooth and short.

•       Allow 1 to 1.5 hours in total for queues and the return, plus time at the monastery.

Book online at the official Wings of Tatev site on busy summer weekends, when queues build at Halidzor. Otherwise, you can buy at the station. Tickets are not refundable, but unused tickets can be moved to another date. Weather can close the cable car on some days, so check the site before you set out. Prices and hours as verified against the operator's site in July 2026.

Plan around Monday

The cable car is closed on Mondays in every season. If your Armenia trip runs Monday to Friday, put Tatev on Tuesday or later.

How to get to Wings of Tatev from Yerevan

The lower station at Halidzor is about 255 km south of Yerevan, roughly 4 hours by road. You have three options.

•       Private car or tour: the easiest choice. A driver can combine the cable car with stops on the way and handle mountain roads in winter.

•       Day trip: possible, but long, at about 10 to 15 hours there and back. It leaves little time to enjoy the monastery.

•       Overnight in Goris: the best plan. Goris is about 15 km from Halidzor, with hotels and guesthouses, so you can ride the cable car fresh the next morning.

Public bus 602 runs from Yerevan's Southern Bus Station towards Goris, with a scheduled journey of almost 6 hours. Times change, so check locally before relying on it.

A 2-day southern Armenia route with Wings of Tatev

DayPlan
Day 1Yerevan to Khor Virap monastery (views of Mount Ararat), Noravank monastery, and wine tasting near Areni. Overnight in Goris.
Day 2Khndzoresk cave village and its swinging bridge, Wings of Tatev, Tatev Monastery, and Devil's Bridge with its mineral pools on the gorge road. Return to Yerevan in the evening.

What you see at the top: Tatev Monastery

•       A monastery has stood here since the 9th century. The Church of St Gregory the Illuminator dates from 848.

•       Look for the Gavazan, an 8-metre stone column on a pivoting base, said to have warned monks of earthquakes.

•       In the 14th and 15th centuries, the University of Tatev was one of Armenia's great centres of learning.

•       Entry to the monastery grounds is free. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and keep your voice low in the churches.

Best time to ride

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) bring clear views and comfortable weather. Winter is quieter and cheaper, with snowy views, but mountain roads can be slow and weather can close the cable car. Summer is hot in the Ararat Valley but cooler at Tatev. Our guide to the best time to visit Armenia covers the year month by month.

Safety and travel advice

Wings of Tatev is a well-run, popular attraction. Syunik province does border Azerbaijan, though, and the UK government advises against all travel within 5 km of the eastern border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Check the latest advice and confirm your route and stops with your driver or tour operator before you go.

Tips for Indian travellers

•       Carry Armenian dram in cash for tickets, snacks and small purchases in the villages.

•       Vegetarian options near Tatev are limited. Pack snacks and fruit, or plan lunch in Goris.

•       Wear layers. It is cooler and windier at the top than in Yerevan.

Keep a day free in case the weather closes the cable car.

Add Tatev to your Armenia trip
