Sofia is a modern city with a rustic old world charm. The city has beautiful centuries old churches, synagogues and cathedrals. The Boyana Church in particular stands out with it’s century-old frescoes. Next in line is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built in Neo-Byzantine style, and perhaps the most majestic building in the city. It’s golden plated domes are an architectural delight and the ornate doors and murals add to it’s pristine beauty. The Sofia Synagogue in Sofia Center is the largest synagogue in Southeastern Europe. The striking element of the Synagogue is the chandelier weighing 1.7 ton. The interiors are decorated with wood carvings and multicoloured Venetian mosaics. After visiting these places of worship, do visit the Square of Religious Tolerance formed by the St Nedelya Church, St Joseph Cathedral, Banya Bashi Mosque and Sofia Synagogue which are located very close to each other in the city centre. Sofia has thriving street art and graffiti scene. Tourists can even go on a graffiti tour which generally starts near the Statue of Sofia. For those who love museum hopping, Sofia has plenty to offer. The Archaeological Museum and the Sofia History Museum are important stops. The Sofia history museum was earlier a bathhouse and has an interesting architecture. Sofia also has ruins dating back to the Roman empire and they are a treat for those who love history. The ruins can be found near Serdika II metro station and are encased in glass displays. After a long day of sightseeing, one must relax in one of the Public parks in Sofia. The most popular park is the Borisova Garden which is the oldest park of the city. To be in touch with Nature, a hike up the Vitosha mountain is necessary. It is an easy climb and rewards the climber with sweeping views of the city.
Sofia has a great cuisine. While in the city, one must sample their Banitsa which is a traditional pastry and the plum and grape Rakia which is even stronger if homemade. Also, enjoy the local wine and craft beer. For those who love shopping, there are plenty of places to visit. Head to Bitaka Flea market which is the largest flea market of Sofia for some unusual wares. If a tourist is looking for a vibrant local feel, they must go to the Zhenski Pazar Women's Market. For shopping branded items, walk down the beautiful Vitosha Boulevard which has a glorious view of the Vitosha mountain.
