Pamir highway was partly made in 19th century and partly in 20th century during 1930s. Most part of the highway is unpaved and the road is heavily damaged in many places by erosion, earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. The Pamir highway leads from the city of Osh, Kyrgyzstan, through Tajikistan (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, Khorug, Dushanbe), via the eastern part of Uzbekistan, to Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan. Pamir highway is one of the world’s most famous routes for the adventurous travellers and lies mostly in Tajikistan, the highland country of Central Asia. The second highest altitude highway in the world sits 4655 m above the sea level. The section between Dushanbe and Murghab has the European route number E 008.
You can take a flight or hire a Jeep from Dushanbe to Khorog. But weather condition should be good for flight to take off. From Khorog you can hire your vehicle. Travellers should be experienced with such terrains to travel on such dangerous road. Weather plays a challenge so does the bad condition of the road for drivers.
